LOOK BEYOND APPEARANCES

We all wear masks.
The smile that says “I’m fine.”
The confidence that hides anxiety.
The success that conceals exhaustion.
The carefully curated appearance that hides an unseen struggle.

UNMASKED: The Journey Beyond Appearances is a powerful creative experience using fashion, makeup, music, movement and personal storytelling to explore the realities of mental health and the experiences that often remain hidden beneath the surface.

More than a fashion show, UNMASKED invites us to look beyond appearances, challenge stigma and create space for more honest, compassionate conversations about emotional wellbeing.

THE JOURNEY

Through a four-act creative narrative, the audience journeys from concealment to hope:

  1. THE MASKThe pressure to appear “fine” while struggling beneath the surface.
  2. THE INNER BATTLEExploring anxiety, emotional pain, vulnerability, resilience and the complexity of lived experience.
  3. UNMASKINGA journey towards self-awareness, acceptance and the courage to seek support.
  4. HOPE & CONNECTIONCelebrating resilience, belonging, community and the power of human connection.

As the story unfolds, fashion, colour, texture, makeup and movement transform with it—revealing what can happen when we allow ourselves to be seen.

BEYOND THE EVENT

UNMASKED aims to spark conversations that continue beyond 10 October 2026—raising awareness, challenging stigma, encouraging connection and strengthening relationships with organisations working to support mental wellbeing and recovery.

At its heart is a simple message:
LOOK BEYOND APPEARANCES.
TAKE OFF THE MASK.
BE KIND TO YOURSELF.
ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT.
ALL MINDS MATTER.

Unmasked Fashion Show

The event will explore the reality that mental health challenges are often hidden behind everyday appearances. It will aim to raise awareness on mental wellbeing, foster honest human connection, create a respectful space for reflection and important conversations surrounding wellbeing. It will also look to challenge stigma surrounding mental health,
reinforce the need to speak openly, recognise early warning signs, and seek prompt professional help to improve long-term recovery outcomes.

The Broken Mask: A Symbol of Healing

The event’s signature visual theme is the “cracked mask,” inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese artistic tradition of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and precious metal. Instead of disguising damage and repair, kintsugi makes them visible and a beautiful part of the object’s history. For the UNMASKED show, this becomes a powerful metaphor: scars and vulnerability are a universal part of our human stories. Words including HOPE, SEEN, ENOUGH, HEALING, STRENGTH and COURAGE will appear through the creative presentation, representing thoughts and experiences that can remain hidden behind the masks people wear.

The event will also feature some prominent voices and community leaders who advocate for mental health awareness:

Anamaria Almasan, Deputy Consul General and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Romanian Consulate General in London, joins the event as distinctive keynote voice strengthening the event’s wider message about community, human connection and the importance of creating spaces where mental
health and wellbeing can be discussed openly and respectfully.

Elizabeth “Lizz” Nsarkoh, Curator and Organiser of UNMASKED,
said:

“I created UNMASKED because people can appear confident, successful and completely fine while privately carrying pain that others cannot see. Too often, we respond only when someone reaches crisis point. I wanted to use the power of fashion and the creative arts to encourage us to look again, listen more carefully and create space for honest conversations. If this experience helps even one person feel seen, ask for support or recognise that they are not alone, it will have achieved something important.” L&D Panache founded by Lizz will also be showcase its new collection in recognition and celebration of those working within healthcare and mental wellness sectors,

Dr. Adesegun “Dr. King Smade” a cultural entrepreneur and founder of major Afrobeats and Festivals, noted “Mental health is just as important as physical health. Too often, especially within our communities, we learn to look strong on the outside while carrying battles nobody can see. True strength is being able to unmask, speak honestly, ask for support and create spaces where people feel safe to be heard. Awareness must lead to understanding, and understanding must lead to action.”

— #DrKingSMADE

Councillor of Newham, Thelma Rose Odoi says “There’s strength in honouring your journey and giving yourself the time and space you need to heal. Asking for help isn't weakness —it takes courage to choose yourself, seek support and continue growing.”
